The Sixes

Year 1 (Design Make Live)
Project Overview
circus comes to town.

six of us represent six different stages in life cycle, birth; youth; exploration; maturity; decay and extinction.

movement and inspiration of the model came from our initial experiment on extraodinary bodies. by documenting and mapping our movement, we develop the idea of life cycle. our wearable model helps / add difficulty to our movements, therefore when we put on our model, the performance starts, we are force to move the way as in one of the life stage we represent.

movement with obstacles placed inbetween the path

the space between things; objects with agency, and the effects that performative actions have on familiar environments. By experimenting with the types, quantities and scale of clothing and objects with agency that might affect the quality, means and extent of our mobility.

after our individual experiment between extraordinary bodies and surroundings (including obstacles), we came into a group of 6, to develop further on our pervious movement and tryto find a stronger connection between the sixes. After experimenting with different movement, we decided to pick a creature from animals to inspire our prosthetics. Emulating the movement of the creature we picked, forming a prosthetics that might help and restrict our movement

each model was designed based on the movement we wanted to present within our stage. the model either helps or restrict our movement, forcing us to move like the life stage we represent.hence, we will be performing with the wearable model we made, following the ‘life cycle’ path, representing how each life stage interact with our body.

extinction
last stage of life cycle
Apr 2014 - Mar 2015
extinction represents the last stage in life cycle, refer to my early stage research over crabs and how they ........

by mapping the movement in the early stage of extraodinary body experiment, adding obstacles into the path restricts my movement.in the sixes, i represent extinction, with strings connecting my hands and legs together at a certain length.when my left leg wants to move forward, my right head must move backwards to release strings, with a rotating wood frame to restrict my movement.therefore my movement under this model looks like people at their extinction stage.

a self-rotating wooden frame connected to a body restriction system formed by strings with wooden wristband & fetter
